Everyone has heard of singing waiters
The idea of singing waiters is familiar to most people but why? I for one have never been crooned too (or at) by a waiter !
Perhaps it's the old movies like "Hollywood Hotel" (1937), where the star (rejected actor) ends up as a singing waiter? He naturally ends up doing well when he's noticed by the very studio who turned him away (gotta love those happy endings!)
History of singing waiters
Actually there is a real happy ending in the story of the very famous Irving Berlin. Berlin was one of Tin Pan Alley's most prolific writers, author of songs like; "There's no business, like show business" and "White Christmas". Part of an immigrant family in New York at the turn of the 20th century he earned money by leading a singing beggar into cafes. It was not long before the enterprising Berlin had composed and was singing his first composition as a singing waiter in a restaurant (Pelham's Cafe).
